BJJ Gi Premium Features
There are many quality Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) Gis on the market, all with different construction and features. While we will not be able to cover every feature in this article, we will use our Clear Standard BJJ Gi to give you some ideas as to what to look for when choosing your Gi. When designing the Clear Standard Gi, our goal was to create a BJJ Gi that was a combination of all the features we liked from different Jiu Jitsu Gis.
1. Double Layer Knee
The first feature, and arguably most important to the longevity of your gi, is having a double layer of fabric in the knee area of the gi. In our experience, this has been the area where we have seen the most failures in well-used jiu jitsu gis. While almost all popular BJJ Gi manufacturers construct there gi pants with a double knee layer, at Clear Jiu Jitsu we have made this an even higher priority. Our gi pants feature a full-length double layer from the knee area all the way to the bottom of the pants, with an approximate 4 inch additional layer and stitching at the cuff of the pants. This additional fabric and stitching significantly decreases the likelihood of the pants tearing at the single layer of fabric between the double knee layer and the cuff, as is common in most other jiu jitsu gi pants.
2. Double Layer Cuffs
The next area of the gi that experiences the most wear is likely the sleeve cuffs. Clear Jiu Jitsu Gis feature an approximate 4 inch double layer and extra stitching at the cuffs of the sleeves, more than double most other brands. Not only does this double layer of fabric help increase the durability of the gi, it also helps to fend off sleeve grips from your opponent.
3. Thick Belt Loops
A third potential failure point in jiu jitsu gis is the belt loops. Thin and/or weakly attached belt loops and get accidentally snagged and torn during training. At Clear, all of our gis feature thicker than normal belt loops with double stitching.
4. Stretch-rope Drawstring
The fourth BJJ Gi feature that we have found makes a noticeable difference in fit and feel is the drawstring of the pants. Some jiu jitsu gi pants will have a simple fabric drawstring, a rope drawstring, or even a "foam" drawstring. Our Clear Standard Gi features a stretch-rope drawstring to help the pants stay in place when rolling, and increase the overall comfort of the pants.
5. Mesh Shoulder Lining
A significant factor in the fit and feel of a BJJ Gi is the shoulder lining, or lack thereof. Many jiu jitsu gis do not come with any lining on the shoulders, allowing the gi fabric to ride directly on your shoulders during training. Our Clear Standard Gi features a fully sublimated shoulder lining to help increase comfort.
