BJJ Rash Guard Features
There are currently many different companies offering BJJ rash guards, with a myriad of different features. To help you navigate this ocean of polyester and spandex, we have compiled our list of what we believe are the three most important features when deciding to purchase a BJJ rash guard.
The most important feature of a BJJ rash guard is going to be how it fits the body (you will notice that both of the other items on this list are directly related to fit as well). Ideally, you want the rash guard to fit snug and not be too long in overall length. Be mindful of how the sleeves fit, especially if buying a long sleeve jiu jitsu rash guard. In our experience, we have found it frustrating when the when BJJ rash guards have loose sleeves. Loose sleeves can be accidentally grabbed or "caught" when rolling, and can make it more difficult to slip in chokes.
When considering the construction of a BJJ rash guard, there are three main things that you want to pay attention to: material composition, stitching, and sublimation. Usually you want to look for a blend of polyester and spandex to provide a balance of fit and durability. If possible, ask some of your training partners if they like their rash guard, or if you can feel the material to get an idea of what you would like. Stitching is the most important factor when it comes to durability. Look for high-quality stitching that also allows for the material and seam to stretch as necessary. At Clear Jiu Jitsu, our BJJ rash guards are fully sublimated (no screen printing or anything similar), including the back tag to avoid any potential irritation when rolling.
The third and final important feature, which also has a significant impact on the fit of a BJJ rash guard, is the waistband. The waistband of the rash guard it likely the first thing that will potentially start to become irritating when it is constantly riding up during training. Clear Jiu Jitsu rash guards feature both elastic and silicone at the waistband to help prevent the rash guard from moving out of plan when training, two features usually only found on premium high-end BJJ rash guards. We have tested the durability of our silicone waistband over months and dozens of washes. While the elastic-silicone waistband increase our manufacturing costs by approximately 10%, we believe that the end result is well worth it. Try out our rash guards and let us know your thoughts!
